Green Light Classrooms, NSDC Conference attended by Karen Loesch, Daniel Boone
Founded by Dr. Rich Allen, Green Light Education applies the latest theories in accelerated learning, educational psychology and brain-based teaching to help educators and executives teach, communicate, motivate and facilitate more effectively.
This workshop was a very practical demonstration of Green Light lessons. Teachers observed and participated in the lessons. Then, after discussing the strategies that make the lessons effective, teachers had time to adapt the ideas to their own content - leaving with lesson plans they could use.
A few of my favorites were/are:
Hopscotch Spelling (A hopscotch with the alphabet is painted on the floor or drawn on a mat and then students "hop" out the word. Some teachers attending the workshop thought it could also be used with vocabulary words! Students could "hop" the word out and then define it, etc...)
News Reporter (Students interview and/or report on a topic/lesson just given using toy microphones. The premise behind many of the activities is that students need time to move/talk every 10-15 minutes throughout the day. This particular activity allows both!)
Word Toons (This activity allows students to "doodle" but also requires them to write, as well. For example, the presenter had us draw a dog, given step by step directions. The writing assignment could be a personal narrative involving a dog/pet, a poem, fictional story with the dog as the main character, etc...)
These and many other ideas are included in the book, Green Light Classrooms, by Richard Allen
